October 4: Sandra Sdraulig delves into Patrick, Stylishly & Gothically Rebooted with director Mark Hartley and writer Justin King
Director Mark Hartley, known mostly for his music videos and his highly acclaimed documentary Not Quite Hollywood, has triumphed with his first fiction film Patrick, a remake of the classic Australian cult thriller starringRachel Griffiths and Charles Dance.
Set in an eerie private hospital for the clinically comatose, located in a remote seaside town, Patrick centres on the mysterious telepathic powers of one of its coma patients. Stylish and full of gothic foreboding as well as classic genre tensions and twists, Patrick was aptly described by The Guardian as, “a satisfying onslaught of madness and mayhem that should leave viewers suitably drenched in perspiration”.
On the cusp of its national theatrical release, Mark Hartley and writer Justin King will discuss what made their collaboration so successful and share the experience of their first foray into fiction filmmaking.
