Friday 23 March: Kris Mrksa: Shaping True Stories into Screenplays
In his 12 year career Kris Mrksa has won numerous awards and accolades
and has written for some of Australia’s most critically acclaimed TV series
including Underbelly, The Slap, East West 101 and The Secret Life of Us, and
was script editor on both seasons of the SBS comedy series Wilfred, now
successfully adapted for US television. In 2006 Kris co-wrote the award
winning tele-movie The King, based on the life of Graham Kennedy, which
was the highest rating drama ever screened on Australian subscription TV.
Kris has just completed scripts for Devil’s Dust, an ABC miniseries based on
true events surrounding the James Hardie asbestos scandal. He will discuss
how ideas are developed into production scripts; the dilemmas of translating
‘true stories’ for the screen and how he deals with that dreaded fear of the
blank page.
