Friday June 15: Jan Sardi: Adaptation, audiences and award winning films
Jan Sardi is one of Australia’s best known and internationally acclaimed screenwriters. It was his screenplay for
Shine that first drew him to local and international prominence resulting in AFI and AWGIE award wins as well as
Academy, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Writers’ Guild of America award nominations.
Jan’s screenwriting career is distinguished not only by Award wins and nominations, for both film and television,
but more recently by his uncanny ability to adapt works that have gone on to be box office successes including
hit films The Notebook and Mao’s Last Dancer. He is currently adapting The Secret River by Kate Grenville, and
Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier.
Jan will discuss the key ingredients of a successful adaptation; how he goes about taking audience into account
and the most effective way of creating dramatic structure.
