Friday Oct 5: Andrew Knight, Writer – Mastering character and ideas
Reading an Andrew Knight script is rarely short of sublime. Often full of acute and complex observations; drama
that glides into humour and back again with unexpected agility and dialogue that plays to the subtext as much as
to the text. His work is masterful and it’s no surprise to find that Andrew has written five feature films and more
than 1,200 hours of top rating drama, comedy and live programs.
Co-founder of Artist Services, one of the most creative and prolific production houses in Australia, Andrew cocreated,
wrote and executive produced Seachange, the highest rating series ever on the ABC, and has
continued to write one award winning production after another (Full Frontal, Fast Forward, The Fast Lane, DGeneration,
After The Deluge, My Brother Jack) with the third series of Rake in the co-writing slate.
This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the best in the industry talk about their craft as Andrew discusses why
developing character and attending to ideas underpinning a script requires greater attention than structure.
