Friday June 29 – Alkinos Tsilimidos: hard hitting low-budget features
Independent director, writer and producer Alkinos Tsilimidos has been consistently praised for his penetrating
low-budget feature films. They are resolutely hard hitting, delivering performances of raw emotional intensity
and honesty.
His début feature Everynight…Everynight (1994) won international critical acclaim and was awarded Best First
Film at the Montreal World Film Festival and was in Official Selection at the Venice International Film Festival.
His subsequent feature films (Silent Partner 2001; Tom White 2004; Em 4 Jay 2008 and Blind Company 2009)
garnered similar attention all alluding to not only Alkinos’ powerful yet restrained direction but most particularly
his ability to deliver striking performances, cementing his reputation for being an actor’s director.
Alkinos will discuss the pleasures and pains of working outside “the system”; how he works with Colin Friels and
other actors to secure astonishing performances and his recent foray into theatre with the celebrated Melbourne
Theatre Company production of Red.
