Friday On My Mind August 23: Screenwriting & Hollywood Showrunning – David Hannam
Any new writer wanting to carve a career in film and television is likely to be wondering how to get started and what practices they might adopt when they do. Writer, David Hannam, has more than a few observations to share and his views bear his varied experience and the sharp eye of his background in journalism.
David is currently juggling commitments from Matchbox Productions to the Children’s Television Foundation while in post-production on Carlotta, a bio-pic telemovie for the ABC which he co-wrote/produced. He most recently developed the highly successful and critically praised Prisoner reboot, Wentworth, for Foxtel and has also written, story edited or script edited series drama for almost every Australian network with credits including Winners & Losers and Dance Academy.
In 2009 David’s view of the role of a writer on a production shifted somewhat when he was offered a Film Victoria International Fellowship and lived in Los Angeles to work as a showrunner attachment at CBS Television’s NCIS and NCIS: LA.
This session will reflect on the best way for a writer to get their critical first credit, David’s experiences in LA and why it might be valuable to consider adapting some US practices to the Australian environment.
