Multi-award winning Fred Schepisi (Plenty, Roxanne, The Russia House, Six Degrees of Separation, Empire Falls, The Eye of the Storm) is one of the very few Australian directors that can be said to have carved a significant international reputation.

Alison Nisselle describes herself as an “old chick, done everything”. We wouldn’t dare. But what’s accurate about that description is that having worked in the film and TV industry for more than 30 years, she really has done just about everything! As a writer, Alison has covered the full spectrum from film to TV, drama to documentary and series to serials. What’s refreshing is that Alison delivers elder stateswoman wisdom with straight-talking accuracy.

Drawing on classic Australian serials such as Home & Away, Neighbours, The Sullivansand Prisoner, this session will take an in-depth look at the defining ingredients of a television serial; look at how they are distinguished from television series with valuable insights into how to go about writing them.

Serials often offer unique first timer employment opportunities so this session is geared for those trying to secure their first gig in the television industry.

FRIDAY 10 MAY 2013 @ 5.00PM – MELBOURNE , Leigh Whannel – Co-Creator of the Saw Franchise

Actor, writer, producer and co-creator of the Saw franchise, Leigh Whannel would have to be one of the most successful Australian practitioners in the film industry right now and given that his slate of films have generated approximately one billion box office world-wide … that’s quite possibly by a long shot.

What’s abundantly clear is that the success of the Saw franchise was far from an aberration. When Leigh and his Saw collaborator, director James Wan, teamed up again they repeated Saw’s phenomenal success with the 2011 paranormal thriller Insidious. They made it for a million and at last count, it has generated more than 100 million.

Melbourne born and raised Whannel, who is back in town to make another feature film The Mule, will join us to discuss the importance of generating your own work; knowing your audience and what he means by strength in numbers.

Guest: Actor, writer, producer & co-creator of the Saw franchise, Leigh Whannel

FRIDAY APRIL 26 - Jeffrey Walker: Rake-ing in the SuccessJeffrey Walker (Angry Boys, Rake, Jack Irish: Bad Debts, Jack Irish: Black Tide) is becoming one of the most sought after TV directors in Australia and following a stint in the US (Bones), that’s a reputation that is starting to gain traction overseas as well. Starting out in the industry as an award winning child actor Jeffrey has for the past decade focused on directing. His impressive directorial style, evident on projects such as the Jack Irish telemovies, unsurprisingly earned him an AACTA Award for Best Direction earlier this year.

Jeffrey will discuss his recent experience of working in the US and the similarities and differences between the two industries; the transition from acting to directing and from directing television to film. Hopefully he will also let us in on how on earth at the age of just 30 he has already directed over 85 hours of broadcast television!

FRIDAY ON MY MIND – FRIDAY 19 APRIL @ 5PM – MELBOURNE

FRIDAY APRIL 19 – Knockout Performances & Working with Actors Peter Sardi
Peter Sardi secured his first job as a professional actor on the Australian police drama
series Cop Shop. Soon after, he was in LA studying acting at The Lee Strasberg Institute.
That training, followed by his debut as an acting coach to the inexperienced cast on the
classic Australian feature Moving Out, prompted him to shift his focus from client to coach.
He began a series of workshops for actors to explore the teachings he had studied in the
States and, thirty years on, Peter continues to teach at his School of Acting in Melbourne.
The techniques that underpin an impressive performance need to be invisible but, through a
series of clips, Peter will highlight the preparations and considerations that go into delivering
a knockout performance. As well as discussing the importance of ‘being in the moment’ and
the best ways for directors to work with actors. Peter will explore the astuteness of David
